The abstract count uses your first paragraph as an estimate. Reference count looks for numbered lines or DOIs. For an exact section count, paste that section on its own.

Why manuscript word count matters

Almost every journal sets a word limit for the abstract, the main text and sometimes the number of references. Going over these limits is one of the simplest ways to get a desk rejection — an editor may return your paper before review purely because it is too long. Checking your counts before you submit takes seconds and saves you that risk.

What this word count checker measures

This free manuscript word count tool counts words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and references, and estimates reading time. You can paste your text or upload a Word (.docx) or PDF file, and it also lets you enter your target journal's limits so you can see at a glance whether your abstract, main text and reference list are within range or over. All of the reading and counting happens in your browser, so your unpublished manuscript is never sent to a server.

For the most accurate section counts, paste each section on its own — for example, paste just your abstract to check it against a 250-word abstract limit.
